Michael Allison, Founder & CEO of Adversity Leadership Institute, Keynote Speaker & Bestselling Author
Michael W. Allison is the creator of Adversity Leadership®, a leadership methodology that equips leaders and organizations to think clearly, make confident decisions, and build high-performing cultures when the stakes are highest.
For more than 25 years, Michael has led in environments where pressure was not an exception. It was the job. From combat operations in Iraq and executive leadership in government to transportation, technology, higher education, and entrepreneurship, his career has been defined by one question:
What allows leaders and organizations to perform at their best when everything around them is uncertain?
That question became the foundation for Adversity Leadership®, a practical leadership system informed by leadership science, neuroscience, human performance research, and real-world executive experience.
Today, Michael partners with Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, universities, and high-performing organizations to develop leaders who don’t simply withstand pressure, but use it to strengthen decision-making, culture, and organizational performance.
It was forged through decades of leading in environments where pressure was constant and failure carried real consequences.
Born in Jamaica, Michael experienced disaster, displacement, and uncertainty at an early age before immigrating to the United States. At 17, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a Sergeant and Amphibious Assault Section Leader with 1st Marine Division. During combat operations in Fallujah, Iraq, he survived a VBIED attack, earned the Purple Heart, and led Marines through some of the most demanding conditions imaginable.
Following military service, Michael faced another battle as he navigated PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the challenges of transitioning to civilian life. Rather than allowing adversity to define him, he committed himself to understanding why some leaders and organizations thrive under pressure while others struggle.
That pursuit led him to study leadership science, neuroscience, human performance, resilience, and trauma recovery, including advanced study at RUSH Medical University. He earned an MBA in Applied Management, a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems, an Associate of Applied Science in Homeland Security & Emergency Management, and completed the University of Florida’s Veterans Entrepreneurship Program.
Michael’s leadership experience spans transportation, government, technology, higher education, and entrepreneurship. He led railroad operations at Norfolk Southern, managed enterprise technology initiatives for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, served as Director of Military & Veterans Affairs at Florida Atlantic University, worked alongside leaders such as General Colin Powell, and built an INC. 5000-recognized company.
Today, every lesson learned under pressure forms the foundation of Adversity Leadership®, helping organizations develop leaders who think clearly, lead confidently, and perform when it matters most.
For more than 25 years, Michael has helped organizations strengthen leadership capability, improve decision-making, and build cultures that perform under pressure.
His clients include Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, universities, nonprofit organizations, and high-growth businesses, including Amazon, Microsoft, NASA, Salesforce, Lockheed Martin, NBCUniversal, Apple, Visa, Boeing, United Way, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Norfolk Southern, the University of Miami, the University of Maryland, and many others.

Through his white papers, leadership frameworks, podcast appearances, and ongoing research in leadership science, neuroscience, and human performance, Michael continues advancing the field of leadership under pressure while helping organizations prepare leaders for an increasingly complex world.
While Michael has led Marines in combat, executives in the boardroom, and organizations through change, the leadership role he values most is husband and father.
Together with his wife, Courtney, and their sons, Corey and Omar, he has built a life grounded in faith, resilience, service, and purpose. Their journey has been marked by adversity, restoration, and unwavering commitment, reinforcing Michael’s belief that the strongest leaders first learn to lead themselves and those closest to them.
Away from the stage, Michael enjoys traveling with his family, mentoring veterans, advocating for mental health awareness, studying leadership and human performance, and investing in the next generation of leaders.
For Michael, leadership has never been simply about achieving results. It is about building character, strengthening relationships, serving others, and leaving people and organizations better than you found them.
Every organization faces uncertainty. The organizations that succeed are led by people who can think clearly, make confident decisions, and build cultures that thrive when the stakes are highest.
Whether you’re planning a keynote, leadership conference, executive retreat, or organizational leadership initiative, Michael will help your leaders develop the mindset, systems, and skills to perform under pressure and lead with confidence.
